Don't Miss Out! Get better healthcare
Did you know that people with learning disabilities can get extra support when going to the doctor?
Many people with learning disabilities find going to the doctor difficult. It can be difficult to make appointments, understand what the doctor is telling you, and to explain how you are feeling. All these things could be made easier if you tell the doctor that you have a learning disability, and get your name added to the learning disability register.
Barnet Mencap are working with Royal Mencap to promote their new Don’t Miss Out guides which explain how you could do this and get extra support, and healthcare that meets your individual needs.
If you tell your doctor that you have a learning disability and get your name added to the learning disability register you could get:
- More time for your appointment
- Information in easy read
- Appointments at times to suit you
- An Annual Health Check
Annual Health Checks are a free check up with your doctor that people with learning disabilities can have. They are a great way of helping you stay healthy, however currently not everyone who can have one is asking for one.
Royal Mencap have worked with NHS England to produce videos and guides called Don’t Miss Out. These show the benefits of being on the learning disability register and having an Annual Health Checks. You find these guides on the Royal Mencap website
So tell your Doctor that you have a learning disability and make sure you are getting the extra support that you need.
You can find out more at Barnet Mencap’s Annual Health Check event on 29th March, 10am at St Pauls Church, Finchley.
Be Happy. Be Healthy. Don’t miss out.
